In a surprising turn of events last summer, Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s military ruler, found himself facing a dire situation as rebel forces encircled the country’s capital, Khartoum. In a desperate bid for assistance, he reached out to an unexpected ally: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The significance of Zelensky's response to Burhan's plea cannot be overstated, as it was informed by a complex web of geopolitical considerations.
